Trump Rails Against Nonexistent Democratic Candidate in Late-Night Post

President Donald Trump fired off a late-night Truth Social post on Wednesday, slamming “Mohammed El-Sayed” for being a “Terrorist Sympathizer.”

Whether Trump misnamed Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Dr. Abdul El-Sayed on purpose or by mistake is unclear. But no one by the name Mohammed El-Sayed is running in this year’s midterm elections. The president further claimed that El-Sayed  “goes back to the days of the Jihad.”

In the post, Trump reiterated his support for El-Sayed’s Republican opponent, former Rep. Mike Rogers:

Mohammed El-Sayed is a terrible Candidate for the Dumocrats. While his opponent, Mike Rogers, is an extremely good one, Mohammed goes back to the days of the Jihad. He is a RADICAL Extremist, Terrorist Sympathizer, and no different from his best friend, America Hating Hasan Piker. How’s France doing? Mohammed’s Values are not exactly those of Michiganders, or those of our Great United States of America! He is WRONG for Michigan, and WRONG for America. VOTE FOR MIKE ROGERS — HE HAS MY COMPLETE AND TOTAL ENDORSEMENT, AND WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP

Despite Trump’s insinuation that El-Sayed is not a Michigander, the candidate was born in suburban Detroit to Egyptian immigrants.

On Tuesday, Trump slammed Fox News for interviewing El-Sayed, though in that instance he only referred to the Democrat by his last name.

“FoxNews spends more time covering the Jihadist and Dumocrat candidates than they do the good old fashioned Republicans, the people that have saved America, and are making it great again,” he wrote. “All they talk about is Dumocrat Jihadists like El-Sayed, with his softball interview by Martha MacCallum, and the like.”

Polls have shown El-Sayed leading Rogers, albeit with a narrow lead within the margin of error.

After winning the Democratic primary in August, El-Sayed took issue with a Republican attack ad that used his full first name, Abdulrahman.

“They think they want to use my whole name against me,” El-Sayed said. “Mike, listen, man, if you can’t say the name — it’s Abdulrahman — keep the name out of your damn mouth. I’ll be happy to give you lessons.”
