CNN’s Kaitlan Collins Says Trump Is ‘Personally Obsessed’ With Dan Sullivan vs. Dan Sullivan Race

President Donald Trump is “personally obsessed” with an Alaska Senate race that includes two candidates with the same name, according to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.

Republican incumbent Dan S. Sullivan has been locked in a close race with Democrat Mary Peltola — while dealing with another candidate, Daniel J. Sullivan, on the ballot.

Speaking Friday on The Source with Kaitlan Collins, the anchor opened her show with a look at the president’s admission that he’d ordered the Justice Department to file a lawsuit to block the certification of the race — should the Republican lose.

Collins said Trump is particularly interested in the race:

Now there are two men named Dan Sullivan, as the president noted. They’re running for senate in Alaska.

Senator Dan Sullivan is President Trump’s Republican pick, Dan J. Sullivan is a former fifth grade teacher.

The Justice Department is arguing this could confuse voters. That’s despite the Alaska supreme court ruling that both can be on the ticket.

Both Dan Sullivans and the state made a point to label Senator Sullivan, as you saw, both as a registered Republican and as the incumbent, also, because Alaska has ranked choice voting, it’s not an either or choice for voters here.

They’ll put an order, the candidates that they believe would best represent them.

But I’m told that the president has been personally obsessed with this saga, and it has become a staple talking point during his rallies.

The DOJ filed an extraordinary lawsuit Friday to block the certification of Alaska’s Senate race if the incumbent loses while Daniel J. Sullivan is still on the ballot.

Daniel J. Sullivan advanced to the general election, thanks to the state’s ranked-choice voting, after he finished in the top four in the August primary. Peltola received 49.5% of the primary votes, while Daniel S. Sullivan got 41.4% and the other Sullivan got just 2.5%. Democrat David Leslie earned 1.1% of the primary vote, according to Ballotpedia.
