Ted Cruz GOES OFF on Jack Smith In Wild Senate Hearing Moment: ‘Is It a Crime to Be a Republican?’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) went after former special counsel Jack Smith like a Rottweiler devouring a juicy steak when he took the microphone and started pelting Smith with questions about his investigations into President Donald Trump and other Republicans on Tuesday morning.

Cruz vented that Smith’s “disgraceful” probes – and his conduct during them — would go down in history as the “most egregious abuse of power in the history of the Department of Justice.” The Texas conservative, as the ex-prosecutor sat across from him during his congressional testimony in Washington, D.C., claimed Smith’s “witch hunt” against Trump and other Republicans was driven by a crazed obsession with bringing down his political enemies.

“Let me say congratulations, because you have succeeded where Richard Nixon failed, which is weaponizing the Department of Justice to go after your political opponents,” Cruz said towards the end of his allotted time. Congratulations.”

He continued, “I understand for the rest of your life you are going to be hailed as a hero in the Resistance Movement. I assume you have a pink hat somewhere at home, and people will be proud of you for resisting. But I will tell you what you have done: You have brought the Department of Justice into disrepute. Because instead of being apolitical, instead of enforcing the law, you willing were conscripted as a foot soldier for the DNC.”

Smith sat silently as Cruz got his parting shots in.

The two squabbled a bit more at the start of Cruz’s 10-minute slice of time. Cruz hit Smith with several questions about the organizations he subpoenaed during his investigations, from the RNC to Turning Point USA to Fox News; when Smith curtly said he didn’t remember specifics about the subpoenas, Cruz slammed him.

“You can sigh all you like; it’s a very simple question,” Cruz said. “You know damn well you did! You’ve been questioned about the checks you guys got; you know the answer! So why don’t you answer the question?”

Cruz then pointed to a large cardboard graphic he had printed out behind him, showing Smith issued 197 subpoenas to “spy on” 430 Republican organizations. The senator said it was shocking that Smith never seemed to go after any Democrats.

He then asked him, “In your view, is it a crime to be a Republican?”

“Absolutely not, sir,” Smith told him.
