Scott Bessent Declares Strait of Hormuz Will Be ‘Worthless’ Strategically to Iran — In Two Years

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed on Tuesday that the Strait of Hormuz will be “worthless” to Iran in two years during a conversation with Fox Business’s Larry Kudlow at the Group of 20 finance ministers’ summit in North Carolina.

As described by Fox Business host David Asman, in for Kudlow, on Tuesday’s edition of his program on the network, the pair’s conversation centered around “booming growth under President [Donald] Trump, the success of free enterprise versus big government socialism, and the impact of Operation Economic Outcast on the Iranian regime.”

In an Aug. 19 Truth Social post, the president announced the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION” in history against Iran, dubbing the plan “ECONOMIC D-DAY!”

“The only good thing about COVID,” Bessent said on Tuesday, “was that it showed us where many of the chokepoints are.”

“We could see the Iranians are trying to use the Strait of Hormuz as a chokepoint,” he continued. “It’s not a chokepoint for the U.S., but it is a chokepoint for many other countries, but, you know, that will be bypassed in two years. In two years, the Strait of Hormuz will be, like, a worthless piece of water. The oil will be going on pipelines across land.”

Notably, however, the International Energy Agency’s senior oil market analyst, Rebecca Schulz, told NPR just last week, “While bypass routes for oil are helpful for ensuring supply through periods of instability, they cannot substitute for the need for a durable long-term regional settlement to the conflict.”

Additionally, Robert McNally, once the senior director for international energy on former President George W. Bush’s National Security Council, told the outlet, “When we talk about energy flows, the Strait of Hormuz is the most relevant chokepoint on the planet. Even if regional producers are able to build pipelines and options to direct flows around Hormuz, the benefit, and there will be a benefit to that, will not make Hormuz irrelevant.”

Recently, the U.S. has again engaged in fresh strikes against the area, targeting Iranian launchers on Larak Island that were preparing to launch mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
