‘Red Lights Flashing!’ CNN Data Guru Issues Warning on Pete Hegseth’s ‘Job Security’

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten suggested that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s job may be on the line ahead of the midterm elections.

During a segment on Monday’s CNN News Central, Enten highlighted the fact that Hegseth has become the least popular member of President Donald Trump’s cabinet. According to polling data from Quinnipiac and Fox News, Hegseth’s net approval rating was a staggering -22. Trailing behind Hegseth were Vice President JD Vance (-17), Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (-9), and Secretary of State Marco Rubio (-8).

“Pete Hegseth, as I said, the lowest of the low,” Enten said. “Twenty-two points underwater, and this has been something that’s been going on throughout the entire administration. He has been underwater in every single poll that I could find. That is his job disapproval rating being above his job approval rating, and Iran has not helped.”

Enten then compared Hegseth’s approval rating to that of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who sat at -7 ahead of the 2006 midterms. Rumsfeld, Enten noted, resigned shortly after those elections. He continued:

This is historically low because Donald Rumsfeld, who wasn’t exactly smelling the roses, he was seven points underwater. Again, a net popularity rating in the negative, underwater, but still 15 points better than Pete Hegseth. And why is this comparison in my mind so much? It’s because, remember, Don Rumsfeld was essentially forced to resign after those midterm elections, after Republicans got crushed. And I think there’s some question if the midterms go the way that a lot of folks think they might go, will Donald Trump’s tune on this gentleman right here perhaps change a little bit? Well, we’ll have to wait and see.

CNN anchor John Berman then asked Enten how Hegeth’s approval rating compared with other cabinet members who were ousted during Trump’s second term. Enten revealed that former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and former Attorney General Pam Bondi had net ratings of -16 and -20, respectively. Before their exits from the Trump administration, they were still viewed more favorably than Hegseth.

“There are definitely red lights flashing in the polls when it comes to Pete Hegseth’s job security,” Enten said.
