Nate Silver Says ‘Every Indicator Is Bad for Republicans’ in Midterms — Except One
It’s not looking good for the GOP heading into November… but there’s one reason for Republicans to be optimistic: They have a lot more dough to throw at the midterm elections than Democrats, according to Nate Silver.
“This is one of the more consistent elections that I’ve tried to forecast, in that sense that like, every indicator is bad for Republicans,” the polling guru said on the Thursday episode of the Lovett or Leave It podcast. “Except maybe the outside money, that is the one thing they have going for them.”
And Silver said the Republicans will need that money to combat the hole it’s in. He said there is usually a 7-8 point swing against the president’s party during the midterms, but he is projecting a 10-11 point swing against President Donald Trump this year.
He said it looks pretty similar to the 2006 midterms to him, where the Dems gained 31 seats in the House and 6 seats in the Senate — and flipped both chambers in the process — because of then-President George W. Bush’s unpopularity.
But the Republicans still have a month to turn it around, and having a lot more money is a good way to do it, Silver said.
CNBC recently reported the GOP’s “three national committees entered September with roughly $233.4 million in cash on hand, nearly double the $130.4 million held by their Democratic counterparts.” And that’s not even including the $416 million the MAGA Inc. super PAC had in the bank, as well as the $126 million between the No Going Back PAC and Safety & Affordability PAC Inc, two other Trump-aligned groups.
While Silver’s remark isn’t what conservative voters want to hear, CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten gave an even more bleak prediction earlier in the week. Enten warned Trump’s -16 net approval rating was a terrible sign and led him to believe a “blue wave” is about to come crashing down on Republicans.
“Simply put, mathematically, this equals a Democratic majority for the House of Representatives,” Enten said.
