‘I’d Love to Run Again!’ Trump Ratchets Up Third Term Talk Even as He Claims ‘Exacting’ Language May Keep Him from Pursuing it
President Donald Trump said he would “love” to run for president again in 2028 — but there is just one problem: the “exacting” language in the Constitution blocks him from doing so.
The president sounded a bit bummed he won’t be able to run for a third term during an interview on New York Post reporter Miranda Devine’s Pod Force One podcast. Devine joined Sunday Morning Futures on Fox Business to give a sneak peek at Trump’s interview, one day before the episode comes out, and shared the moment he was resigned to the fact this will be his last term.
“Look, I’d love to run again if I had the chance. But the language is very exacting. I would love to run,” Trump said. “They had a poll the other day where I beat everybody by so much, I’d love to run. But it’s fine. You know, we have more than two years left — that’s a long time. We can do a lot in that period of time.”
Host Larry Kudlow then asked Devine after the clip finished how Trump seemed to be handling it.
“Miranda, was he wistful? I mean, he acknowledged that he can’t run, he didn’t flirt with it. But in your judgement, was he wistful?” Kudlow asked. “Was he thinking, ‘Well, maybe, gee whiz, I wish I could.'”
Devine said the 80-year-old president did seem wistful to her. She said the comment came in the context of his recent coast-to-coast rallies, which Trump has been holding in an effort to boost support for Republican candidates heading into the midterms. She said Trump admitted he’s feeling a bit nostalgic about the rallies and will miss doing them.
“He’s come to terms with the fact that he won’t be running again,” she added.
Trump’s remarks come after he has said a number of times he wants to run in ’28 — a potential move which has really upset his critics, who immediately point out the 22nd Amendment bars him from doing so.
At other times, Trump has acknowledged he is “not allowed” to run again, no matter how badly he wants to.
