Fox Contributor Argues New Poll Shows GOP ‘Moving Into Its Post-Trump Future’

Peter Hamby, Puck’s national correspondent, kicked off a debate on Tuesday when he shared a new poll from Echelon Insights that found Republicans now see themselves primarily as supporters of the party as opposed to supporters of President Donald Trump.
“Brutal new poll for Republicans from @EchelonInsights,” Hamby wrote on X, adding:
Only 34% of Rs consider themselves primarily a supporter of Trump, versus 56% who say they’re a supporter of the GOP.
That number has completely reversed compared to January 2025 (59% Trump, 36% GOP)
Byron York, the chief political correspondent at The Washington Examiner and a Fox News contributor, shared Hamby’s post and asked, “Is this really bad for Republicans?”
“Wouldn’t it be worse if the numbers were the same today as January 25? The old numbers were understandable given the circumstances and the dominance of Trump’s personality,” York continued, adding:
But after the midterms the party will be moving into its post-Trump future, whatever that will be. Trump will certainly be a factor in that, but going into 2028 and beyond, isn’t it a good thing for Republicans to be thinking about the Republican Party? So today’s numbers might or might not be bad for the GOP in the midterms, but seem healthy for its longer-term future.
MS NOW’s Chris Hayes added, “I’ve been saying this for a decade but everyone has totally forgotten how cultishly obsessed the entire right was with George W Bush before they all pretended he never existed.”
