China Gives Trump Administration a Thumbs Up on AI-Renaming — But Has No Plans to Play Along

President Donald Trump received a thumbs up from China’s communist government on his push to rebrand artificial intelligence as “super intelligence.”

China’s foreign ministry announced on Saturday it “respects” Trump’s name change — but that its country has no plans to start using the term.

That update comes a day after Trump claimed Chinese President Xi Jinping said he was digging the name swap during his official three-day visit to the States.

“Very productive meeting with President Xi for both the U.S.A. and China,” Trump posted on Friday. “Tremendous things will be happening. Like almost everyone else, he seemed to like calling the poorly and inaccurately named Artificial Intelligence to a far more accurate and important name, SUPER INTELLIGENCE. That would be “SUPER!” Everyone last night agreed, also. President DJT.”

The name change has been a hot topic for Trump over the last week, after he posted a poll to help him change the term AI, which he said was “very ineloquent.”

Trump offered three alternatives on Truth Social: Super Intelligence, Extreme Intelligence, and Supreme Intelligence. He followed that up with another poll, pitting “super intelligence” against “superior intelligence” on Sept. 21; super intelligence ended up winning with about 65% of the votes.

All of this comes as AI has been a key focus for Trump in September, after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said it was imperative to “slow down” the pace of AI development, before the tech potentially goes off the rails and hurts humans. Elon Musk and OpenAI’s Sam Altman endorsed Amodei’s warning soon after.

Trump has scoffed at those concerns, saying the doomsday fears about AI are nothing more than a “HOAX.” He also vowed progress will not be stopped on his watch, saying it was vital the USA stays head of China in the AI race; Trump reiterated that argument on Saturday morning.

“The United States of America is not going to be putting on brakes,” Trump said before heading to the Texas-Tennessee football game. “They want to stop our progress because we’re leading China by a lot, and we’re going to keep it that way.”
