From Platner to Piker: Is Pod Save America Actually Trying to Torpedo the Democrats?!

In an off-year election cycle, the Democrats should be coasting to an easy midterm result. Instead, there is swirling speculation with a divided party lacking in funds. (The Dems literally put up the building of their private club as collateral for a bridge loan to come up with cash.) Amid the turmoil the “Obama Bros” at Pod Save America are not helping things out for the party.

With primaries underway and a struggling administration, you would think it would be a bacchanalian atmosphere on the popular podcast. Instead, there has been a more severe tone over there, and issues have been in need of being addressed. It is almost reflective of the travails seen from the preferred party.

Featured Bro, Jon Favreau came out with a curious post on Xitter, where he was imploring the Democratic Party faithful to forego mentioning the name of the increasingly toxic figure Hasan Piker. It is mirthful to see the desperation.

This is simply amazing to behold. Recently, it was a laugh line to see Piker’s best bud, Abdul El-Sayed, trying in vain to distance himself. Following perpetual media questions about Piker’s many unacceptable comments, he responded by referring to his close friend in distaff fashion, noting that he was merely “a streamer from California”. That is simply not going to work.

El-Sayed and Piker have been connected umbilical-style for months, and now he wants to posture as if there is no reason to make a connection, pretending he is a nameless entity on the horizon. The Pod Save America crew has the very same problem.

Seeing Favreau attempting to command the party to avoid Piker like a pariah is deeply amusing, since they hosted the guy on their own show. It was a bit of a comedy of errors, as they tried to give Piker a chance to clear up his controversial positions. Instead, the brash personality doubled down on his stances.

During his visit in April, Favreau attempted the practiced method of serving as the Democratic Custodial Services agent. He set the table for Piker by bringing up some of his problematic positions and comments, to allow for a chance at some spin and cleaning up his image. Instead, Piker simply owned all of the content, boldly. Some examples.

FAVREAU: “This is one from January; ‘Hamas is a thousand times better than a fascist settler colonial apartheid state.’”

PIKER: “I stand by that.”

FAVREAU: “My question is, when you say Hamas is a thousand times better, do you actually mean that, or is that a rhetorical move or like a solidarity signal?”

PIKER: “I mean, it’s all of the above. I do mean it.”

As hilariously off the rails as this attempt had gone for Pod Save America, it has taken them months, and far more incendiary comments from Piker, for them to come around and realize that maybe platforming the guy was a bad idea. Now they are straining to have the party clean up the trashed living room after they allowed the guy into the house.

This is a direct parallel to the other problem the show helped to fester in the Democratic ranks. It was last October when Graham Platner came on the show on to clear up his burgeoning issues. Just starting with the fact that a candidate who had just declared his candidacy roughly a month earlier already needed a rehabilitation stint should have been enough of a warning.

It was 20 minutes into the discussion before Tommy Vietor brought up the Nazi tattoo on Platner’s chest, and his set up indicates clearly an effort to dismiss the controversy. They played the now-infamous video clip in the bar of Platner shirtless and displaying his Totenkopf ink. Vietor introduced it as, “Some of your political opponents are telling reporters that tattoo has a Nazi affiliation.”

He immediately followed that with a question designed to ridicule the controversy and render it moot. “Is that accurate? Are you a ‘secret Nazi’?” The cleanup effort was on par with the technicians from Servepro.

And they were not done. Platner made a return to PodSave America this March, and it was more of the defensive and glowing approach to the candidate. Understand, this appearance was after he had appeared on the podcast of a virulent anti-semite, and after his staff had to scrub a favorable post he made on social media towards neo-Nazi Stew Peters.

Yet despite the fact that Platner was sporting more red flags than a road crew indicating buried cable lines, the PodSave America Bros were full of adulation. Once Platner’s inevitable immolation took place, there were these same guys, now calling for an end to the campaign they had been pimping for months.

What this looks like is a group erecting a tower of wooden pallets, and after starting a bonfire, they see it collapse into the house, setting it ablaze. Then there they stand, with a gallon of gas in one hand and a Zippo in the other, asking around to see who is responsible for the disaster.
