Zelensky Jabs Trump’s Truth Social ‘ENERGY CEASEFIRE’ Pronouncement After Putin Attack
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took a jab at President Donald Trump’s Truth Social “ENERGY CEASEFIRE” pronouncement on Monday as he revealed Russian President Vladimir Putin violated it to strike a Ukrainian power plant within hours.
Speaking remotely to the Warsaw Security Forum, Zelensky said Trump’s surprise Truth Social announcement came before Russian drones struck.
“Immediately after the post, Russia launched a targeted strike on a power plant in Kharkiv, causing further damage to our energy system,” Zelensky said.
“It was clear that Putin does not read Truth Social,” he quipped.
Trump had announced the purported deal on Sunday with little warning, writing: “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!”
Zelensky, at the time, said the announcement caught Kyiv by surprise, while Moscow did not immediately confirm that it had agreed to any such arrangement.
Ukrainian officials later said the CHP-5 thermal power plant in Kharkiv was struck at least twice, causing a fire, while Zelensky said Russia had also targeted energy infrastructure elsewhere.
The Ukrainian leader nevertheless told the forum, which was attended by Europe’s top leaders, that Kyiv was prepared to honor an energy truce on a reciprocal basis.
“We are ready to respect an energy ceasefire if Russia is ready to do the same. We agree, if they agree,” Zelensky said.
He also reiterated Ukraine’s offer to halt long-range attacks on Russian oil facilities if Moscow stopped targeting Ukraine’s energy network.
“If Russia wants us to stop our long-range strikes against its oil refineries and oil exports, then Russia must stop its strikes against our energy system and critical infrastructure, and stop killing our people,” he said. “This is only fair.”
The dispute comes as Trump has increasingly focused on attacks against Russian refineries amid soaring diesel prices at home, while separately striking a widely criticized deal to allow more Russian diesel onto global markets.
