Videos popping up on social media over the last 24 hours have shown numerous confrontations between pushy members of the Chinese media and Secret Service agents during President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington, D.C.
The clips emerged Thursday ahead of a lavish state dinner at the White House for Xi, attended by members of President Donald Trump’s cabinet and such notable figures as billionaire Elon Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
One clip, posted by Visegrad24, shows a Chinese photographer by the red carpet refusing to budge as a couple of female Secret Service agents ask him to move. When a third male agent approaches, he finally starts walking away.
Accompanying the video is the text: “More and more videos are coming out of China’s traveling “press corps” disrespecting U.S. Secret Service agents during yesterday’s Trump-Xi state dinner at the White House.”
Another video from AFP White House correspondent Danny Kemp shows a Chinese reporter repeatedly shouting “No!” as a Secret Service agent and a press handler show him where to stand.
Another clip from the DC Examiner’s Christian Datoc shows the same reporter arguing with the Secret Service as he tries to take a spot among other reporters.
“The answer is no,” an agent repeatedly tells him.
“NOW: WH and Chinese delegation are currently fighting on the south lawn regarding placement of official government cameras,” Datoc wrote. “USS is getting involved. Xi is expected in just a few minutes.”
He added, “It’s getting very heated USS and WH officials threatening to remove one Chinese official for interfering with shots and official WH cams.”
Connor Stringer of The Telegraph called the scene “chaos” and described “lots of shouting and raised voice as they refuse to move for Secret Service” at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Inside the White House, Trump gave Xi a firsthand look at his in-progress White House ballroom, encouraging them to “walk into a construction site.”
Republican Senator Thom Tillis (NC) later called Trump’s warm welcome of Xi a “WTF moment.”
