Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is facing backlash from fellow progressives after taking the stage at a Chris Brown concert in Texas to honor the singer, with critics pointing to his sordid history of violence towards women.

The Democrat appeared alongside Brown at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Saturday, where she suggested that his career and impact, along with that of tourmate Usher, would be formally recognized.

“We are here because of Chris Brown!” Crockett shouted as Brown stood beside her and the crowd erupted.

“We are experiencing Black joy at the highest level. And I wanted to make sure we document that at the congressional level. So let’s give it up again for Chris Brown,” she added, embracing the singer before leaving the stage.

Texas state Rep. Venton Jones (D) also joined Crockett onstage and presented Brown with a state resolution honoring his achievements in music and entertainment.

The appearance quickly drew fire from progressives, who questioned Crockett’s decision to honor Brown given his numerous legal issues, including restraining orders and allegations of violence, stretching back to 2009 when he pleaded guilty to felony assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna.

The backlash also reopened party frustrations surrounding Crockett’s lack of political advocacy following her defeat by rival James Talarico in this year’s Texas Democratic Senate primary.
