‘Historically Illiterate’: Conservative CNN Commentator Rips Katie Miller Over Fox News Hit
Republican strategist and CNN political commentator Shermichael Singleton tore into podcaster Katie Miller as “historically illiterate” after she claimed that women prioritizing other ambitions over marriage and motherhood led to the fall of the Roman Empire.
Miller, the wife of top White House adviser Stephen Miller, joined Wednesday’s edition of Fox News’ The Will Cain Show, where she was asked about declining marriage rates and reports of child marriages in Germany.
“If more women put the same energy into their marriages and into finding a spouse that they do into their careers, you would see society have a lot more babies because, ultimately, that’s what led to the downfall of Rome — when women stopped having babies, and you started putting energy elsewhere. That is where society just absolutely collapses,” she said.
Singleton took to social media on Thursday to express his outrage at her words, writing:
I’m a big supporter of starting and building healthy families. But if you’re ignorant enough to believe Rome fell because women stopped having babies, I suggest picking up a few history books.
We can make a case for strong family units without being historically illiterate.

The Western Roman Empire fell in 476 A.D. after centuries of political instability, economic troubles, military defeats, and invasions by Germanic tribes.
This isn’t the first time Miller has found herself caught up in a debate over motherhood involving members of her own party.
Back in February, Meghan McCain, the daughter of the late Republican Sen. John McCain, criticized conservative messaging on motherhood, writing that “there are so many women who want to become mothers and can’t or – just haven’t found the right person.”
“Also some women don’t want children and it’s ok,” she added, arguing that conservatives should be “welcoming of all kinds of women and voters.”
Though McCain didn’t mention Miller by name, the podcaster responded with, “Too many women aren’t told the harsh realities of biology,” adding that “if women put that same career energy into dating it would lead to better outcomes.”
