‘Very Confusing!’ Maggie Haberman Says Republicans Tell Her ‘They Feel Put Upon’ by Trump’s Midterm Convention
New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman said Republicans have privately complained about President Donald Trump’s midterm convention, with lawmakers questioning why they are being pulled off the campaign trail to attend.
Haberman discussed the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) gathering during a Sunday appearance on The Court of History podcast with hosts Sidney Blumenthal and Sean Wilentz, as fresh details emerge about the unusual two-day event planned for Dallas next month.
“The convention is – yeah, I have not spoken to a single Republican who is not in a deep red safe district who’s happy about this,” Haberman said.
She continued: “They feel put upon by this, it stays off of the trail to have to go do this, it’s very confusing what the purpose is beyond just celebrating Donald Trump and as you say it’s very hard for a lot of these folks to run on Trump’s aspects of Trump’s record right now – in some cases, all of it.”
Trump announced in late June that the first-ever midterm convention would take place in Dallas on September 9 and 10, as Republicans prepare for November’s elections.
The event, branded by RNC Chairman Joe Gruters as “Trump-a-palooza”, is expected to function as a two-day rally aimed at energizing the Republican base and driving turnout.
House Republicans, however, are expected to contribute $25,000 to attend the event, which awkwardly falls immediately before the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks and just weeks before voters head to the polls.
