‘Trump’s Numbers Suck’: Former Trump Adviser Offers Blunt Assessment on CNN
A former campaign adviser to President Donald Trump flatly stated on CNN that Trump’s numbers “suck,” but insisted that there may be a silver lining for Republicans.
The president’s approval rating has been dramatically underwater for months, thanks in large part to the Iran war, which has exacerbated inflation after Iran restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz following U.S. and Israeli attacks. A CNN poll conducted in July showed Trump’s approval rating at just 34%.
The aforementioned adviser, David Urban, appeared on Friday’s edition of The Source, where he did not attempt to sugarcoat Trump’s numbers, but added that Democrats are also unpopular.
“The last polling that we did here at CNN at the end of July, Trump’s numbers suck,” Urban said. “But you know whose numbers suck worse? Democrats. Chuck Schumer is like 12%… Trump was like 38%. Democrats, generic [ballot] were 31%. ‘Orange man: bad,’ Democrats have tried to run on that every time since Trump’s been around. ‘Orange man: bad’ doesn’t win, right? You need to put forward a positive message.”
Republicans narrowly control the House 219-212 and the Senate 53-47. President Donald Trump is historically unpopular. Only twice since the end of World War II had an incumbent president’s party gained seats in a midterm election, in 1998 and 2002. This week, The Atlantic reported that Trump’s strategy is to make the midterms a referendum on him.
“The president ordered a series of television advertisements about his own record that will serve as a backdrop to the hundreds of individual House and Senate contests,” the report said. “Trump wanted what one person described to us as ‘environmental lift’ ads—commercials that would focus on nationalizing the midterms broadly around his victories—and he suggested that the ad makers mine his own on-camera statements as building blocks.”
