Trump Tries To Distance Himself From Raid on Ilhan Omar’s Home: ‘Nothing To Do With Me’
President Donald Trump insisted he had “nothing to do” with a federal raid at the home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) early Monday morning.
Agents from Homeland Security Investigations searched Omar’s home in Washington, D.C. as part of an investigation into whether Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, lied or gave misleading information in the 1990s when he sought legal status in the U.S. before he became a U.S. citizen.
Omar, a longtime Trump critic, accused the president of trying to “weaponize federal law enforcement,” stating, “I will not be silenced.” Many other prominent Democrats also criticized the search.
Hours after the raid, Trump took questions from reporters, one of whom asked if he knew about it in advance.
“Well, I understand they’re looking at her very carefully,” the president replied. “Uh, I’ve always found her to be totally crooked, personally. But that has nothing to do with me. I think she’s a terrible person, just a complainer. She comes from a country that is a non-country. And then she comes over here and she complains about our Constitution. I think she’s a terrible person. But that’s really up to the DOJ. I have nothing to do with it.”
Trump has frequently targeted Omar and other Somali Americans. The president has touted the dozens of Somali Americans implicated in fraud cases in Minnesota. On Thursday, the president urged Minnesotans to “fight back” against their Somali American neighbors, alleging, “You have been robbed.”
“The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back!”
Trump has insisted that Omar does not belong in the U.S. and has repeated the baseless claim that she married her brother.
