Trump Tries To Control Crowd When It Starts Booing Republican Senator: ‘No, No’

President Donald Trump attempted to rein in attendees at the GOP midterm convention on Wednesday night when they booed Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD).

At Trump’s urging, the Republican National Committee is holding a rare midterm convention in Dallas, with the president taking center stage despite his broad unpopularity. Trump wants to make the contests a referendum on his performance.

During his speech, Trump praised Republican leadership in Congress. He first recognized Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who was in attendance and stood when the president called his name.

“I think [Johnson] will go down as the greatest Speaker of the House, in the history, in the history of our country,” Trump said to roaring applause.

Trump then pivoted to Thune, whom he has repeatedly urged to eliminate the Senate’s 60-vote cloture hurdle that must be met to pass most pieces of legislation. Thune has said on several occasions that Republicans do not have the simple majority of votes needed to change the rule.

“And John Thune is here from the Senate,” Trump continued. “Where is John? Where is John?”

At that moment, many members of the audience could be heard booing Thune.

“No, no,” Trump told them. “John is working hard. He’s got great opposition. He’s got great opposition from the Democrat[s]. [Minority Leader Chuck] Schumer and these guys, they’re terrible. Great opposition. He’s working very hard. He’s gonna have great success. You watch. We are going to have great, great success with our Republican senators. And by the way, we have great, we have great Republican senators.”

Trump wants the Senate to eliminate the cloture rule – also known as the filibuster – so that it can pass the SAVE Act, which currently lacks 60 votes. Already passed by the House, the SAVE Act would require proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate or a passport, when registering to vote. Opponents of the legislation state that it could disenfranchise millions of Americans who do not have ready access to such documents.
