Trump Says Bill Gates Is Actually All In On AI, After Billionaire Predicted It Could Kill 1 Billion People

President Donald Trump dismissed fears about the rise of AI as a Democratic Party hoax and insisted billionaire Bill Gates is all in on AI, despite his prediction that it would kill a billion people.

Trump spoke to reporters on Tuesday following an AI summit where he said tech leaders signed a “separate kind of Constitution” about AI amid growing fears about its rapid growth, including from leaders in the industry. Trump talked up the industry’s “self-policing,” and when asked about AI fears by NBC News’ Yamiche Alcindor, he dismissed them and compared them to fears about “global warming.”

“I think they would love to see it shut down just like it was a hoax for 12 years of global warming, which they changed right now to climate change,” Trump said about Democrats.

He also floated creating a “committee” of sorts to oversee AI and its rapid progression.

“I am seeing tremendous self-policing and they understand they have to self-police and it’s very hard for someone to come out and say these models are very complex and again, I believe they will be used for the good and when not we will be able to nab them but it will be a tremendous amount of self-policing aspect. We are also thinking about forming a committee of sorts where we put maybe ten people on that committee, it could be from that group so that the committee can watch over the whole enterprise,” the president said.

After Trump dismissed concerns about AI, Alcindor brought up Gates’s prediction of AI potentially causing hundreds of millions of deaths.

“Now he’s not saying that anymore,” Trump said.

“He said that on Sunday,” Alcindor threw back.

“Well, I don’t care what he said Sunday because I can tell you yesterday he didn’t say that at all,” Trump said. “He actually went the opposite, but look, it’s one voice. He actually went the opposite. We’re looking at this for good. It’s also maybe the biggest industry — they say bigger than the Industrial Revolution.”

In an interview with NBC News’ Kristen Welker, Gates predicted unchecked AI could be “certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths.”
