Trump Official Who Added Reporter To Group Chat Containing Classified Info Rails Against Leaking Classified Info To Reporters

The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, joined CNN to deliver impassioned remarks against leaking classified information to reporters — despite adding a reporter to a Signal chat containing classified information just last year.

In March 2025, Waltz, then President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, created a Signal group chat with senior administration officials discussing sensitive operational details of planned U.S. strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. He made a glaring error, though — inadvertently adding Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg.

While Waltz initially denied knowing Goldberg or how his number ended up in his phone, a photo soon resurfaced showing the two at a 2021 event that the reporter, who later called Waltz’s claim that they had never spoken “simply not true,'” was moderating.

The U.N. ambassador joined Monday’s edition of CNN’s The Source, where host Kaitlan Collins pressed him on Trump’s unprecedented restrictions on White House press access.

After a testy back-and-forth about the recent media ban, Waltz accused the CNN host of not giving enough airtime to his area of expertise — the United Nations.

“Isn’t that because the president banned three outlets?” Collins clapped back.

“I’m standing here talking to CNN!” Waltz exclaimed.

“The president is making the argument now that it’s a national security threat,” Collins pointed out. “He did not make that argument on Friday or Saturday or Sunday. How is reporting on the president a national security threat?”

“When we have outlets that are relying on anonymous sources and talking about the levels of ammunition we have in the middle of conflict, when we’re talking about vulnerabilities that the United States has,” Waltz said, “that are highly classified, that’s absolutely a national security threat and should be investigated and prosecuted.”

“On the munitions,” Collins noted, “that was in the Inspector General’s report from the Pentagon.”
