Trump Cheers ‘Yellow Cape’ Supporter for ‘Slapping’ Protester ‘Around’ at Georgia Rally
President Donald Trump accused Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) of “probably” paying protesters who disrupted his Georgia rally Friday, moments after lavishing praise on a “woman in a yellow cape” who helped physically remove one demonstrator from the crowd.
Trump was speaking in Dalton as part of a midterm campaign swing for Georgia Republicans when several protesters interrupted his remarks and were forced from the event. The crowd erupted into boos then chants of “U.S.A” as the demonstrators were ejected from the auditorium.
The president quickly turned the disruption into an extended riff: “Look at all the fake news. That’s a lot of fake news. That’s a lot. Tomorrow’s story will be that protest. Like two paid protesters,” Trump told the crowd, before joking that the demonstrators’ parents, who he claimed “voted for Trump” would “smack those kids around when they go home.”
His attention then turned to a young man from the crowd draped in a yellow Gadsden flag who had pushed one protester out.
“Who is the young lady in the yellow cape? Did you see that? Where’s the yellow cape person? She went up – did you see her?” Trump said. “The hell with the women sports stuff. She went up there and ripped them out of their seat and threw them out of here.”
“Where’s the woman with the yellow cape?” he added. “She was great. We are going to bring her to Washington. I love it!”
Trump continued to claim, without offering evidence, that the protesters had been paid to disrupt the event.
“No, but they get paid a couple of bucks and they do that. It’s ridiculous,” he said, estimating they had received “$250 each” and arguing they had “screwed up their reputation for the rest of their lives” and added that they’d be “booked.”
Trump then returned once more to the supporter who pushed them out: “But I love the woman with the yellow cape. She was pushing them around. Slapping the guy around.”
He finally connected the disruption directly to Ossoff, the Democratic incumbent facing Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) in one of the country’s closely watched Senate contests.
“Far left loser Jon Ossoff,” Trump said. “See, now, he probably paid them.”
Trump offered no evidence for the accusation.
