‘People Need to Start Giving Him Credit’: Trump’s New WH Press Secretary Casts Doubt on His Low Polling Before She Even Officially Starts the Gig

Katie Zacharia hit the ground running on Saturday, casting doubt on President Donald Trump’s low polling and telling Republicans they need to “step up” more — and she doesn’t even officially start as White House press secretary until Monday.

Zacharia joined Fox & Friends Weekend following the announcement that she will be stepping into the White House role previously filled by Karoline Leavitt. Zacharia is a senior advisor with Trump Media and she had a brief stint with the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year.

When asked by Charlie Hurt about the upcoming midterm elections, Zacharia said she doesn’t know if she “believes” polling showing sinking approval for Trump and also called on congressional Republicans to increase their support of Trump.

“President Trump has made the case and delivered historic results. I would have loved to have seen more from our congressional Republicans in the Senate. I think President Trump has done everything in his power to do that. Look, I don’t know how much I believe all of the polling numbers,” she said.

Zacharia then focused in on the Michigan senate race between Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed:

I look across the spectrum on all these races and even if you just touched down in Michigan with Mike Rogers and El-Sayed, El-Sayed has come out, just for a little example, on no topics for Michiganders.

He is talking all DSA talking points. He’s not talking about the auto industry, jobs, anything that actually matters to someone in Michigan.

And Mike Rogers is offering a solution, and President Trump has come out behind these candidates and said I’m going to support them, I’m going to support the America first candidates and those who are going to deliver results.

So that is going to, I hope, be effectuated by the time the election rolls around in November, but President Trump… people need to start giving him credit for his multifaceted approach and how he’s trying to bring down prices almost unilaterally all by himself.

Zacharia clarified that where she feels congressional Republicans needed to step up was in passing the Trump-backed SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote and place new restrictions on things like mail-in voting. Trump has repeatedly pushed the Senate to pass the legislation, and Zacharia argued not passing it means the lawmakers only have themselves to blame for their “tight” races ahead.

“If they had passed the SAVE America Act, I don’t even think we would be talking about a lot of these tight races,” she said.

Congress needs to “step up,” she added.

“President Trump did not mince words on getting that passed, but at some point the House and Senate need the step up and come behind him and create law so he doesn’t have to do it by the stroke of his pen,” Zacharia said.
