‘Off to Dreamland!’ Jimmy Kimmel Mocks Trump’s Apparent Doze During ‘Live’ Oval Office Presser

Jimmy Kimmel joked that even Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was urging President Donald Trump to “wake up” on Monday after the president appeared to close his eyes and dip his head during an Oval Office event, just minutes after reviving his familiar “sleepy Joe Biden” dig.

The late-night host zeroed in on the awkward timing during his Tuesday monologue, opening Jimmy Kimmel Live! by noting Trump’s continued habit of invoking his predecessor.

“Trump has been in office now for almost two years, and he’s still trying to blame everything he doesn’t like on Joe Biden,” Kimmel said before playing footage from Monday’s White House event.

“Sleepy Joe Biden, have you heard of him?” Trump asked during the clip.

Cutting back to the studio, Kimmel snarked: “No, I haven’t heard of him, you’ve never mentioned him before.”

The exchange came as Trump announced plans by Mesabi Metallics to invest $15 billion in a new steel plant in Iowa. The proposed facility is expected to begin production in 2030 and create at least 1,750 permanent jobs, according to the White House. The announcement landed just weeks before the November midterms, with Republicans facing several competitive races in Iowa.

As executives and administration officials continued speaking, cameras showed Trump sitting behind the Resolute Desk with his eyes closed at points and his head appearing to dip forward. The footage does not establish that Trump was asleep, but Kimmel seized on the moment.

“Then, only minutes after invoking the name ‘sleepy Joe Biden,’ nappy Don Trump drifted off to dreamland on live TV,” Kimmel said as he played the second clip.

“Even Mitch McConnell was like, ‘Bro, wake up!’” he added.

Trump has previously pushed back against claims that photographs or video have caught him sleeping during public appearances, arguing that images instead capture him while blinking.
