Nancy Mace Slams Ramaswamy’s ‘Shameful’ and ‘Disgusting’ Ad
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) unloaded on Ohio Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy over his “disgusting” new ad.
This week, Ramaswamy’s campaign debuted an ad featuring Donna Arthur, the estranged mother of his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton. Acton and her brother, Phillip Stearns, said that when they were children, their mother married a man who abused them and raped Acton when she was between nine and 12 years old. The man, Cledith Arthur, was indicted for rape and skipped town with Donna Arthur while out on bail. Ultimately, a judge granted custody of Acton and Stearns to their biological father. The two have not spoken to their mother since.
In the ad, Donna Arthur does not address the allegations, and instead calls her daughter a “liar.” Some prominent Republicans have defended the ad, including Vice President JD Vance, who told fellow Republicans to “stop whining about” it.
Not surprisingly, Ramaswamy has taken serious heat from Democrats and Republicans alike. On Wednesday, Mace appeared on CNN’s The Lead, where Jake Tapper asked for her reaction.
“You’re an outspoken woman, and I want to get your reaction to the Ramaswamy ad,” he said. “What do you think of it?”
Mace, who is a survivor of sexual assault, responded:
This ad is gonna go down as the most shameful, disgusting, offensive ad this election season. I can’t believe, and I’m a tried and true conservative, Jake. I know that sometimes the things I say are offensive to you and your audience, but this was the most offensive ad. The socialists and the communists that Republicans are running against, the bar is low. And somehow Vivek Ramaswamy somehow managed to limbo under the lowest bar of decency in this country to go after a woman who was allegedly raped by her stepfather. And not just like, accused. This guy was arrested and charged with child rape.
And the idea that the vice president would go to the mattresses to defend this ad might have cost JD Vance the presidency. I just, when the Republican Party is bleeding women voters, when we are struggling with women voters, this is the ad that you’re going to run in a midterm election?
Mace added that she “was a real big Vivek Ramaswamy fan,” but that she “can’t believe this is what passes decency in this election.”
On his show on Tuesday, Tapper said, “Well, whether or not he wins, this is gonna be a section of his obituary, whenever that may be. This is the kind of thing that just leaves a stain on somebody’s record.”
