MS NOW Host Confronts Kamala Harris About Report Red State Dems Are Asking Her to ‘Stay Away’ From Their Midterm Races

MS NOW’s Peter Alexander asked former Vice President Kamala Harris about Democratic candidates reportedly asking for her to “stay away” from their midterm races.

Harris joined Alexander on Thursday on State of Play to discuss the life and work of journalist and feminist activist Gloria Steinem, who died on Wednesday at the age of 92. Harris spent the majority of the time praising Steinem, but Alexander confronted her on two points at the end of the interview.

Alexander cited a Politico report that dropped this week and stated red state Democrats are looking for Harris to “steer clear” of their races out of fear she’ll hurt their chances.

Harris responded:

Listen, Peter, we need to win, okay? Bottom line, we need to win. I have run locally, I’ve run for statewide office, and obviously nationally. And these candidates know what they need to do to win and I would expect nothing less. I look forward to being on the trail and helping folks where I can help them, but we have got to put a check on this lawless administration and deliver what Americans need and deserve. Lower costs, affordable healthcare, affordable child care, you name it. So I support them in doing whatever they need to do to win.

According to Politico, multiple Democratic candidates have either rejected or said they do not want Harris involved in their races:

Iowa’s two most prominent Democratic candidates have said they do not want Harris to campaign for them. Alaska’s Democratic Senate nominee rejected a fundraising solicitation Harris sent on her behalf. And a swing-district Democrat in Wisconsin and a long-shot Senate hopeful in Kansas both told POLITICO they would prefer Harris keep her distance.

Alexander also asked about a possible 2028 presidential run by Harris, while she brought the point back to the midterms, saying 2028 “doesn’t matter” if Democrats can put up big wins in these next elections.

“Are you going to be on the trail for yourself as a presidential candidate in 2028?” Alexander asked.

“I’m focused on ’26. You know what, Peter? And to be very serious about this, ’28 doesn’t matter if we don’t win ’26,” Harris said.
