Maggie Haberman Astonished by Trump’s Dwindling Number of Advisers: ‘People Are Really Worn Out’
New York Times reporter and CNN commentator Maggie Haberman expressed astonishment at the scant number of advisers counseling President Donald Trump.
On Tuesday, Haberman made a rare appearance on rival network MS NOW, where she promoted Regime Change, her latest book about the president. Speaking to Nicolle Wallace on Deadline: White House, Haberman noted Trump’s poor poll numbers and said the president does not have a “media messaging problem” as some Republicans claim, but a “fact set issue.”
“And the president is very used to talking around it,” Haberman said, before referring to remarks she made earlier in the program. “One of the things I mentioned in the last segment [is] how few people are in that West Wing now. It’s really very striking. It reminds me a little bit, a lot over this summer where, you know, he would be at Bedminster, and it was like Natalie Harp and Walt Nauta and Bill Pulte showing up at the golf course over and over again with foam boards, according to multiple people. That is partly reflective of the fact that I think people are really worn out around him.”
Wallace responded by asking about the role White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles plays.
“But a chief of staff, even in a warped White House, can change that,” Wallace said. “They can decide who’s on the manifest. They can decide who’s there.”
“To a point,” Haberman replied. “I mean, again, he will always decide what he wants to do. So, he will go around people.
“Why doesn’t she quit if she doesn’t have any power?” the host asked.
“I don’t think she has no power,” Haberman answered. “I think that she doesn’t have any illusions about who he is, just based on all of our reporting and what he wants. And I think that’s part of why she has survived and endured in his world.”
