‘Laughably Bad!’ CNN Data Guru Says Trump in ‘Worst’ Position of Any President Heading Into Midterms
CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten revealed Friday that President Donald Trump is in the “worst” position of any president heading into the midterm elections.
Trump’s approval rating across virtually all polls has continued to sink to new lows.
According to the most recent study conducted by Pew Research, the president’s net approval was a staggering -38. That, Enten pointed out, was the lowest pre-midterm approval rating by any president in history.
“I mean, laughably bad,” Enten said. “No president I’ve ever seen is in a worse position before midterm election than President Trump. I mean, just look at this. Just look at this: 38 points underwater — 38 points underwater!
“You go all the way back. You go back to Harry S. Truman, [Franklin D. Roosevelt], at this point before midterm — ever, ever! At this point before a midterm election — you’re talking about your September, October polling — the worst I’ve ever seen is Donald John Trump. Thirty-eight points underwater. I mean, it’s, as I said, the worst I’ve ever seen. It’s laughable.”
Pew’s poll, Enten continued, was not an outlier. Trump’s net approval had fallen to -33, -34, and -38 in the most recent polls from Ipsos, CNN, and The Associated Press, respectively.
“No other president before a midterm election was even at minus-31,” Enten said, “and now we’re seeing one, two, three, four, I guess five if you count that other Ipsos poll, as well. And so we’re just seeing across the map and all the polling data that we are looking at, we’re looking at history in the making here for the unpopularity of President Trump, for a president before a midterm election.
“And if you’re a Republican who is running for reelection this term, or a Republican who wants to join Congress, this is the headwinds that you have to face. It’s historic headwinds in which you are essentially going, ‘Oh my God, how am I supposed to win with numbers from a president this bad?'”
