JD Vance Says He’s ‘Looking Forward to Hanging Out’ with Joe Biden When Asked About Trump Skipping NY 9/11 Ceremony

Vice President JD Vance sarcastically declared he’s “looking forward” to hanging out with former President Joe Biden when asked why President Donald Trump is skipping a New York 9/11 ceremony.

During a Thursday White House press briefing, Vance was asked whether his upcoming attendance at the 9/11 ceremony in place of Trump’s was because of a “special security concern.” The New York Times reported that Trump is skipping the New York event on Sept. 11 because giving a speech is not allowed. He will instead attend an event at the Pentagon on that day.

According to Vance, he and Trump “just decided as a team” that he would be going to New York and Trump would stay in Washington, D.C.:

I don’t think it’s a special security concern. We’ll follow up with the Secret Service to get you an actual answer on that. That’s not what I’ve heard. You have a vice president, you have a president, and there are two very frankly — we’d like to be three or four places on 9/11, but you can’t have one person be in multiple locations at the exact same time, and so we just decided as a team that I would go to New York for 9/11 and the president would stay in D.C. to commemorate what happened at the Pentagon because that was a critical part of the tragedy of 9/11 as well.

Vance said he’s looking forward to the event and he encouraged younger viewers to tune in.

“I did it once before I did during the 2024 campaign. It’s one of the most amazing experiences of my life. And I encourage every American, particularly the people who are young enough to not really remember that day, just to tune in for a couple of hours and see what it meant,” he said.

Vance wrapped up his answer by taking some shots at Biden.

“I’m also, as you guys could probably guess, I’m really looking forward to hanging out with Joe Biden. I’m sure that we’ll have many, many intense intellectual conversations,” he said. “And it’ll be great. We’ll have a great time with the presidents.”

Vance’s press briefing was the first for the White House in 42 days. The vice president took the place of former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who departed her administration role last week to focus on family. She’s remaining an outside advisor to the president.

Trump has taken a more serious tone over reports about him skipping the New York ceremony. He lashed out at reporter Maggie Haberman on Truth Social, calling her a “scammer.”

“This is more Corrupt News, I’ve been to New York many times over the years, and no one ever speaks, it’s a ‘solemn ceremony!’ I never even thought of what Maggot made up, and besides, I would love not to speak, because I’m speaking all the time, and this is a day to remember the victims, and their beautiful family members,” the president wrote.
