James Carville Rejects Dems Selling Anything Except Anti-Trump Message in Midterms: ‘Why Do They Need To Be for Anything?’

Veteran political strategist James Carville rejected the idea that Democrats need to sell anything other than an anti-Trump message in the midterm elections.

Carville joined MS NOW’s Ari Melber on The Beat on Tuesday evening and argued Democrats don’t need to move their messaging away from President Donald Trump because he is central to every campaign and he’ll be front and center for voters.

“Where are you on the Dems ‘get out of the way’ because we just went through some of the numbers in the polling, and Dems still need the affirmative message of why this is not just anti-Trump, but turn the page to helping people’s lives. Where are you on that balance?” Melber asked Carville.

“Why do they need to be for anything?” Carville asked.

He argued people will be voting on whether they want to “slow” Trump’s administration or not and that the president is already making himself the center of the midterms for Republicans, noting his upcoming midterm convention in Dallas.

Carville said:

The people are going to vote on Trump. Trump is going to spend, I don’t know, claims to have spent $400 million on TV, making it about Trump. He’s going to go to Dallas. They’re going to have this idiotic mini convention, which is going to be a disaster and my advice to Democrats is don’t just do nothing. Stand there! The time for the Democratic message is going to be when we run for president.

But, you know, you can say, this is going to be about one thing and one thing only. Do you want to continue in the same direction of Trump, or do you want to slow this train down? And I think clearly people want to slow it down.

Carville predicted big wins for Democrats, and he once again shared his prediction that Trump will leave office early. The political strategist has thrown this out multiple times recently, arguing Trump will leave office just a few short months after the midterm elections.

“I will say it again, I think he’s going to leave early. He doesn’t have any idea of how hard he’s going to be hit, and these Republicans are going to turn on him because they’re going to figure out it’s all about him,” he said. “It’s his convention. All his ads are going to be about him.”
