Hillary Clinton Rips Trump for Pushing ‘Socialism for the Rich’ — While Railing Against ‘Handful’ of Leftist Dems
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton trashed President Donald Trump for pushing “socialism for the rich” while railing against a “handful” of leftist candidates who have surged in popularity in the Democratic Party’s ranks.
Clinton appeared on MS NOW’s Morning Joe on Thursday for a ranging interview after penning a new article for The Atlantic on the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
During the sitdown, host Joe Scarborough pivoted the conversation toward the midterms, arguing that Republicans regularly found a “new boogeyman” – listing same-sex marriage, “trans athletes,” and other talking points he said were used by conservatives to bring voters to cast a ballot in their favor.
“Now it’s the DSA [Democratic Socialists of America]. Now, wherever I go, it’s like, you know, I hear, guys, well, just kind of like me going, ‘Well, yeah, he’s crazy, but look at the other side. They’re communists! They’re socialists,’” he said.
Mocking, Clinton replied: “They’re like a handful of people with like this much power” she said, gesturing with her hand.
“Compared to the unchecked power of the other side,” she added.
Scarborough reasoned that there had always been a leftist contingent, particularly out of New York, represented in the Democratic Party, asking the former secretary of state: “I mean, is this going to work? Are people going to keep voting against their economic self-interest?”
“I hope not,” Clinton said, adding: “I mean, every other word out of Trump’s mouth is socialist or communist. So, you know, they’re doing everything they can to throw the mud.”
Scarborough countered that the current administration was one that has taken equity stakes worth nearly $27 billion in 30 public and private companies, a direct government involvement in strategically important businesses across sectors tied to national security, including semiconductors, steel, nuclear energy, rare-earth minerals and quantum computing.
“Yeah, well, [Trump’s] the one who has socialism for the rich and socialism, you know, for families’ interests,” she said.
Speaking of the DSA, she continued: “So look, from my perspective, everybody has to run their own campaign. And I will say that, you know, some of the language and some of the positions, you know, on the far left go way too far. But on the other hand, we do have a housing crisis, we have a health care crisis.”
Clinton then said that if Democrats return to Congress with a majority in November and a broad coalition that includes DSA members, she would encourage them to “write the bill” and take their positions beyond “sloganeering.”
