Fox News Reports GOP Senator Has Yet to Respond After Viral Gaffe: ‘We’ve Not Heard Back’

Fox News highlighted Sen. Eric Schmitt’s (R-MO) major flub on Tuesday, reporting that the network had “not heard back” from the Republican after reaching out for comment.

Earlier today, former special counsel Jack Smith testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill, facing intense questioning over his investigations into President Donald Trump from Senate Republicans.

At one point, as footage played on Tuesday’s edition of Special Report shows, Schmitt claimed that Smith had secretly traveled to Atlanta to meet with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who led her own investigations into Trump, citing text messages he said proved Smith was at an Atlanta Hawks game.

Schmitt went on to allege that Smith had lied about his whereabouts while testifying, calling him a “total dirtbag.”

As Fox News’ David Spunt explained, though, “It turns out the text messages obtained by Schmitt were not about the Atlanta Hawks NBA game, and Smith was not in Atlanta. He was in Maryland at an Iowa Hawkeyes college game.”

The Fox broadcast then ran footage of Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who made sure to point out the mistake during the hearing before admonishing Schmitt by saying, “For a U.S. senator to have false information… based on a confusion about the name of a team… and then call you a dirtbag is something that deserves an apology.”

She added, “I think that people should have their facts straight.”

“We reached out to Senator Schmitt’s office for comment on that dust-up in the Senate Judiciary Committee, but Bret, we have not heard back yet,” Spunt told anchor Bret Baier.

Parts of the moment aired earlier Tuesday on the network’s America Reports, though the clips only included Schmitt’s “dirtbag” insult and none of the context explained by Spunt on Special Report.

And while Schmitt didn’t respond to Fox News, he did post on social media, referencing former Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark.
