‘Five Alarm Trumpster Fire!’ CNN Data Guru Says Trump Plunged to His ‘Worst Ever’ Approval in Major Poll
CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten was left stunned by President Donald Trump’s collapsing poll numbers, declaring the president’s latest approval rating his “worst ever” in a major survey with just two weeks to go before the midterm elections.
“This is a five alarm Trumpster fire – that’s what we’re talking about,” Enten told anchor John Berman on CNN News Central.
The warning came as Enten walked through a new Reuters/Ipsos poll showing Trump with a 31% approval rating, the lowest recorded for him in either of his presidential terms.
“Trump’s approval rating hits all time low,” Enten said. “This is the Reuters-Ipsos poll. You know, at the beginning of his term, he was plus six. He was two thumbs up. And now we’re talking -35 points, the worst he has ever been in the Reuters-Ipsos poll.”
Among independents, Enten said Trump was “54 points underwater.”
“I mean this is down there with Jacques Cousteau and The Little Mermaid,” he added. “This is how low Trump is right now.”
Asked by Berman whether the result might be an “anomaly,” Enten said the same pattern was appearing across multiple major pollsters.
“It is not some type of anomaly. This has been happening over and over and over and over again,” he said.
Enten then compared Trump’s numbers with previous presidents heading into midterm elections, displaying surveys from NBC, ABC/Ipsos, Reuters/Ipsos and Pew that all had Trump at least 31 points underwater.
“When I was digging through the data sets, the worst ever in October was, in fact, Harry S. Truman, who was 30 points underwater and these numbers exceed all of them,” Enten said.
He added that Truman and George W. Bush were the closest historical comparisons he could find for presidents carrying deeply negative approval ratings into a midterm election, noting that both subsequently lost control of the House and Senate.
“The two historical comparisons that I think are closest to this one, the Republican party is not going to like,” Enten said, “because Trump’s historically low approval rating at this point below a midterm, at least historically, has brought not just the president down, but the House and Senate control with it.”
Berman replied: “That doesn’t seem like a great situation.”
“It seems, as I said, like a five alarm Trumpster fire,” Enten replied.
Trump, meanwhile, has unexpectedly turned Enten into a recurring feature of his own campaign rallies in recent weeks. At rallies in Tennessee and Montana, the president played a different Enten segment showing that Trump’s support among MAGA Republicans remained extraordinarily high. Trump called the CNN analyst “very good” and thanked the network after the clip played.
Tuesday’s segment offered a very different set of numbers that probably won’t make the rally reel.
