‘Don’t Treat Us Like Idiots’: Piers Morgan Goes off on Israeli Ambassador Over Gaza and Suggests, ‘You Have Something To Hide’
Piers Morgan went off on Israel’s ambassador to the U.K. on Wednesday, telling her that her government has “something to hide” in Gaza.
Morgan grilled Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely on Israel refusing to allow foreign journalists into Gaza, which has been under siege since Hamas carried out the Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attacks that killed 1,200 Israelis. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, more than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive. (The ministry does not distinguish between fighters and civilians.) In March, Israel initiated a blockade of the territory that Cindy McCain, head of the World Food Programme, said has resulted in a humanitarian”catastrophe.”
“Why don’t you let international journalists into Gaza so they can report fairly and freely, without being led around by the IDF?” Morgan asked Hotovely. “Let the journalists in, because you banned them, and the only reason you continue to ban international journalists from going in there is not because of our safety, as you all so quaintly put it. It’s because you don’t want the Western journalists to get in there and see what’s really happening.”
Morgan said that if international journalists were allowed to report from Gaza, they would be able to report on the scale of the civilian casualties:
MORGAN: It may be, if you’d let them in, then they wouldn’t just count the number of terrorists who are being killed, they’d also be able to record how many children are being killed, because it strikes me as utterly extraordinary. That you, as the ambassador to my country, are able to say with complete clarity and certainty, 30,000 Hamas have been killed, but you seem to have absolutely no idea how many children have died in the process. No idea. Or you have no interest. I don’t know which one it is.
HOTOVELY: Piers, let me go back to your question about the journalists. I think in the end of the day–
MORGAN: Let them in.
HOTOVELY: –we’re coming to the point where journalists will be allowed to get into Gaza as long as there is no risk for them.
MORGAN: It’s got nothing to do with you, the risk to journalists! That’s not your problem!
HOTOVELY: This is, from my point of view, once there is no risk to their life, I’m sure they’ll be allowed to get in.
MORGAN: Oh, what a load of flannel, Ambassador. Don’t treat us like idiots, please. We’re not idiots. You’re not doing it for our safety. You’ve banned the journalists so that they don’t report on what is actually happening. Only you know why you’re doing that. I don’t know. Maybe you’re doing everything completely fairly. Maybe it is the most moral war ever waged in history, as you keep saying. But the longer it goes on without you allowing journalists in, the less people believe that, and the more people believe you have something to hide.
Hotovely has had some less-than-stellar media appearances. In a January 2024 interview, she suggested that schools and mosques were fair targets because they have access to Hamas tunnels. When the interviewer said, “But that’s an argument for destroying the whole of Gaza — every single building in there,” she replied, “So, do you have another solution – how to destroy the underground tunnels city, that this is the place where the terrorists hide, where they have all the ammunition?”
In October 2023, she defended Israel’s assault on Gaza by invoking the notorious Allied fire-bombings of Dresden in World War II.
