‘Come On!’ Republican Senator Scoffs at Trump’s Claim AI Threat is a ‘Hoax’

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) suggested President Donald Trump is being misinformed about AI after the president said doomsday scenarios about the technology are a “hoax.”

“Come on!” Tillis said when told about Trump’s “hoax” comment regarding AI.

The Republican senator called for major guardrails for the industry and noted that many of its own leaders are asking for more oversight.

He said:

It’s not a hoax. It’s a real thing. This is something that I’ve spent a lot of my professional career in, in terms of advanced technology. There are clearly guardrails that need to go around and anybody that told the president this is a hoax should look at some of the things that Anthropic and some of the other leaders have seen. Look, what CEO in the world who has a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders would go out in public and say, we need some guardrails on what we can do. That by itself should invalidate any assertion that this is a hoax and something we shouldn’t be concerned with.

In Truth Social posts on Monday, the president declared predictions about AI going off the rails amid its rapid progression are a “HOAX.”

“AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX, no different from RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA — UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE — IMPEACHMENT HOAX #1 — IMPEACHMENT HOAX #2 — and all of the other HOAXES and SCAMS that America was forced to endure through the Destructionists’ and Deviants’ foul play and illegal conduct,” he wrote.

Trump’s comments come amid growing fears about AI. Elon Musk and Sam Altman both backed Anthropic CEO’s call for the industry to slow the pace of AI.

That warning followed an Anthropic researcher resigning and warning that the rapid pace of AI could lead it to a place where it “kills us all” within 10 years.
