Bret Baier Surprised by Army Secretary’s Abrupt Resignation: ‘Thought He Was Gonna Stay’ 

Fox News’s Bret Baier expressed surprise after learning on-air that Army Secretary Dan Driscoll submitted his resignation to the Trump administration on Monday.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Driscoll, who has clashed with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, is expected to depart within days. Driscoll had objected to Hegseth’s removal of several senior Army officers.

“With Driscoll’s departure, the Army will lack top Senate-confirmed civilian or military leaders,” the Journal noted. “Gen. Christopher LaNeve has served as acting chief of the service since Hegseth fired his predecessor, Gen. Randy George. Mike Obadal, the Army undersecretary, would be the highest ranking civilian after Driscoll departs.”

Driscoll was a classmate of Vice President JD Vance at Yale Law School. The two are reportedly close associates.

Shortly after the report dropped, Baier, who was speaking with Fox’s Chief National Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin, relayed the news during Special Report.

“And Jen, we’re just getting word now that the U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has tendered his resignation,” Baier said.

“Well, it’s not surprising,” Griffin deadpanned. “He’s a close ally of Vice President Vance, has been butting heads with Secretary Hegseth for months now. In fact, he had disagreed with Secretary Hegseth’s decision to fire many of the Army’s top generals, top leaders, leading to a bit of a brain drain in the Army. And now we understand that Secretary Driscoll has submitted his resignation.”

Baier said the timing was something of a surprise.

“Thought he was gonna stay until after the midterms and run, maybe, Vice President Vance’s [2028 presidential] campaign,” Baier replied.
