Bill Maher predicted Democrats will learn all the wrong lessons if they win House and Senate majorities in the midterm elections and they will then go on to fumble 2028.

On Friday’s Real Time, Maher was joined at the table by California Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D) and during a discussion on the midterms, Maher called out Democrats and accused them of throwing Republicans a lifeline.

“The only thing really the Republicans have going for them in this election, I think, other than of course the cheating and the bullsh*t election finagling, is that the Democrats, still, really, are not renouncing their far left,” Maher argued.

He went on call for more Democrats to come out publicly and condemn the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which has has seen a recent surge in successful candidates, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D).

Maher predicted Democrats will “kick a*s” in the midterms, but they’ll go on to fumble 2028 as he pushed Beshear to call out DSA members.

He said:

I don’t hear it. Maybe I can get it out of you tonight. That would be awesome. Every election, I think, is always the first battle in the next election so this 2026 election is the first battle in the 2028 election. I think that a lot of Democrats are getting a false positive. I think they’re gonna kick a*s and they’re gonna think, oh, the people want what we were giving them back in 2024. And they don’t. I don’t think they do.

Maher added, “I would love to hear a Democrat say the DSA  — which, again, I’ve read this on the show, their own words, it’s not socialism, it is communism.”

Beshear noted that Trump is the one taking “government stakes” in private companies and he argued he can work with anyone on certain issues. The governor did call socialism a “failed experiment.”

“That’s true too, but that’s not really answering the question. I would love to hear somebody say, you are not the Democratic Party. You’re free to do this, but you should take it somewhere else and be your own party,” Maher said.

The comedian and host also interviewed former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Friday’s show, and he gave a fiery defense against critics upset over him visiting the White House for a second time to dine with President Donald Trump.

“Yeah, I did it again, b*tches! I know! I’m the bag guy because I go and say face-to-face to the man the things you write in articles he’ll never read, but okay. You know what? F*ck you. I like these dinners,” Maher said.
