Bill Maher Mocks Liberal Hypocrisy Over Lake Ontario Name Change: ‘Ask Any Latinx Birthing Person’

Bill Maher skewered liberals angry over President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario.

In the opening monologue of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, the comedian quickly took aim at the president’s headline-making decision to name one of the Great Lakes “Lake America” amid a nasty trade war with Canada.

“Trump is so mad at Canada he renamed Lake Ontario Lake America,” Maher said. “Now I gotta buy a new globe again.”

“It’s like the fifth time it’s happened,” he quipped as the audience roared, in apparent reference to Trump’s January 2025 decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America.

He then turned on liberal outrage over the renaming stunt.

“The liberals are very pissed at this,” Maher said.

“They say you can’t just go around changing things to fit your political agenda,” he said, adding, “Just ask any Latinx birthing person.”

Trump officially signed an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America Thursday, telling reporters in the Oval Office he’d been thinking of making the change “for a long time.”

“This is official, effective immediately,” he said moments after signing the order.

The name change comes amid a heated war of words and economics this week between the United States and Canada.

Talks between the two nations broke down late Friday as the U.S. moved forward with 50% tariffs on Canada, which Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to match “dollar-for-dollar.”

Maher may have to buy yet another globe, based on Trump’s remarks during the signing of the executive order.

“As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico we changed it. And now it’s very routinely the Gulf of America,” he said. “So if you think about it, we have a gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean. So maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific or maybe we will change them both.”
