Anna Paulina Luna Defends Trump Jr. Over Putin-Linked Oligarch’s Lavish Wedding Gift
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) argued that Donald Trump Jr.’s personal wealth and friendship with a Russian oligarch make the lavish financing of his wedding fundamentally different from the controversy surrounding Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings.
The Republican was pressed on the distinction by CNN host Laura Coates after ProPublica reported on Monday that Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, largely bankrolled Trump Jr.’s May wedding to Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas.
The report said Kremlev paid for festivities on a private island that can cost around $100,000 per night, while the company behind the wedding’s fireworks charges roughly $70,000 for similar displays.
Asked why Trump Jr.’s relationship with a wealthy foreign national should escape the scrutiny Republicans applied to former President Joe Biden’s son, Luna pointed first to Trump Jr.’s finances.
“According to public records out there, Don Jr.’s net worth potentially may be $300 million. I don’t think that he would need to take a gift like this unless it was actually from a friend,” Luna said.
She later sharpened that argument, arguing Trump Jr. was “independently wealthy” and therefore there was “no influence being made financially because he could easily pay for something like that.”
Luna claimed that the Hunter Biden case was different because, in her view, evidence existed linking his business dealings to his father’s position.
“There’s a big difference between someone knowingly using their father’s position and there being evidence of that, of which came out in the Hunter Biden [case], which then resulted in the investigations into the laptop and those emails,” she said.
Coates countered, noting that Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden were both private citizens whose proximity to a president could potentially make their foreign relationships relevant.
Luna nevertheless maintained that Kremlev was a friend and suggested the timing of the report was notable, pointing to recent scrutiny surrounding Jared Kushner and Russia-Ukraine negotiations.
“I just think that the timing is very coincidental that all of a sudden this is coming out and it’s specifically pertaining to a Russian oligarch,” Luna said.
Trump Jr. acknowledged the friendship, telling ProPublica through a spokesperson that “Umar is a personal friend” but “not someone he has a business relationship with.”
