Bill Simmons insisted he simply didn’t know the rules after learning he was under investigation for getting his daughter’s boyfriend to place bets for him.

On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission announced it was looking into claims made by Simmons on a recent episode of his podcast.

During the show, Simmons said he got his daughter’s boyfriend to place bets on his behalf while he was in another state. Because use of the app FanDuel is legal in Massachusetts but illegal in California, Simmons — who lives on the West Coast — got the boyfriend to log into his account in Boston and make the bets there.

Apparently unbeknownst to Simmons, this violate rules against “proxy betting.” Responding to news of the investigation Tuesday, Simmons said on his podcast:

I talked about how I got my daughter’s boyfriend to place some bets for me in Massachusetts because I was in LA. Did not know about the proxy rules. Yeah, there’s some real rules with this stuff. And they’ve ruled that they, not only are the bets gonna be voided — and I learned my lesson. Apparently, proxy betting [is] not allowed. I actually thought it was, but that’s fine. And now my daughter has to break up with her boyfriend. That was the other thing they rules.

No, I’m kidding. They’re gonna stay together. But yeah, I did learn. Not allowed to do that. So, all those bets went out the window. All that special time I had with Hank, out the window as well. The good news is I’m gonna be in Boston, and maybe at some point I’ll make some more wagers down the road. So there you go, lesson learned.

In addition to the bets being voided, the boyfriend, Hank, was blocked from placing any wagers in the future.
