Dave Rubin Admits He’d ‘Be Going Crazy’ if Democrat Proposed Trump’s $5,000 Checks

Conservative commentator Dave Rubin admitted that he would “be going crazy” if a Democrat proposed sending Americans $5,000 checks, as President Donald Trump has vowed to do if Republicans maintain control of Congress.

The president first floated the plan during last week’s Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Texas. He’s said he doesn’t think the checks will require congressional approval and has pointed to tariff revenue and more than $20 trillion in claimed U.S. investment to justify the proposal.

Those figures have been disputed. CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale noted tariff revenue falls far short of the roughly $1.3 trillion estimated cost of the checks, while calling Trump’s $20 trillion investment figure “fiction.”

Numerous elected officials and commentators on both sides of the political aisle have also expressed skepticism about the president’s claim he could sidestep Congress and overcome the Constitution’s Appropriations Clause.

Rubin made the admission on Friday’s edition of Actual Friends, his podcast with former ESPN anchor Sage Steele, fitness influencer Jillian Michaels, and celebrity physician Dr. Drew Pinsky.

Steele, a Republican, first snapped that Trump’s plan “reeks of desperation,” emphasizing that “if this were [former Vice President] Kamala Harris or [former President] Joe Biden or [Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul] El-Sayed or anybody running right now on the other side… we would crush them and rightfully so!”

“I mean, I got no way around that,” Rubin conceded. “Sage is completely right. If the other side did it, I’d be going crazy — that’s number one. So, you gotta call balls and strikes. Number two — as Trump, I assume, knows — the Republicans have the House and the Senate now, so if you’re going to do it, why do you wait ’til after the election? Then you’re gonna punish the people because the election didn’t go your way? That doesn’t really make sense.”

Calling the idea “a little gimmicky Trump kind of thing,” Rubin concluded, “Anytime the government’s giving you something, it’s not giving you something because it took that from someone else — including you.”
