NY Times Writer Calls for Trump to Be Impeached for ‘Open Racism’
Maybe the third time would be the charm for liberals?
The New York Times opinion columnist Jamelle Bouie called for President Donald Trump to be impeached again on Saturday, this time for his “open racism.” Bouie argued in a video posted to his YouTube account the president needs to be booted from the White House because he has routinely used “vicious racist terms” against Somalis living in Minnesota, which he said was on full display in a recent Truth Social post from the president.
Trump posted on Thursday:
The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants. There is Violence, Murder, and Mayhem all over the State. The people of Minnesota must fight back. You have been robbed, and abandoned by your State Government. Your Governor is an incompetent thief who doesn’t want to get involved.
He just wants to get out of town with as much as he can steal, and then, lead a quiet life. The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing. They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back! If you need, the Federal Government will come to your rescue.
Governor Tim Walz, and Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, must immediately ask for Federal help — and leave the rest to us! President DONALD J. TRUMP
The president’s post comes amid reports Somali gangs have been terrorizing Minnesota neighborhoods.
Bouie said he was so disgusted by Trump’s post he didn’t “feel” like reading it to his viewers, but he shared a screenshot so his viewers could read it for themselves. He claimed the way Trump talks about Somalis is so unpresidential that it warranted his removal for “crimes against the republic.”
“When you’re the most powerful person in the world, every utterance really matters,” Bouie said. “Every utterance shapes the public culture of the United States, it shapes the world. And so the president engaging in open racist demagoguery, in trying to incite race riots, that’s an impeachable offense. That’s something for which a president should be removed.”
He added Trump has been trying to “incite violence” against Somali and Haitian Americans with his comments, which include Trump saying last year he was fed up with Somali immigrants.
“They contribute nothing. I don’t want them in our country, I’ll be honest with you,” Trump said in December. “Some will say that is not ‘politically correct.’ I don’t care. Their country is no good for a reason.”
Trump made the remark a few days after The New York Times reported Somalis living in Minnesota orchestrated a fraud scheme that, according to federal prosecutors, stole “more than $1 billion in taxpayers’ money.”
Interestingly, Bouie argued Trump should be impeached for a third time in his Saturday column, but he did not mention the president’s alleged “racism” as a reason.
“Much of what Trump has done in his second term either meets or exceeds the threshold of his first impeachment,’ Bouie wrote. “There is his corrupt profiteering off the presidency, his occupation of American cities with the National Guard, his use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection as a secret police, his attempts to seize the power of the purse, his abuse of the pardon power, his unlawful political retaliation against law firms and universities and his attacks on press freedom — all impeachable offenses.”
He added, “No, he hasn’t done anything as singularly transgressive as Jan. 6. But in a real sense, the second Trump administration is no less than an authoritarian conspiracy against the constitutional order — a Jan. 6 by other means, including a whole-of-government effort to subvert the midterm elections and preclude any prospect for true democratic accountability.”
