‘Whoa!’ CNN Data Guru Says Independents ‘Really Hate Republicans and Donald Trump’ on ‘Key Issue’
CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten detailed the latest polls showing how Independents have soured on President Donald Trump and the Republican Party on the issue of inflation.
Enten began the Monday morning segment by calling Independents “the name of the game,” adding that when “you win independents, you win elections.” Recent polling data, however, has suggested that the Independents that helped Trump win a second term have become increasingly dissatisfied with his handling of the economy. In 2024, Enten noted, Trump’s polling on inflation was 12 points higher than former Vice President Kamala Harris’s. The president’s net approval on the issue has since plummeted to -64.
“Look at this net approval rating now though,” Enten said. “Whoa, way down there! We’re talking about a 76-point switcheroo on the president of the United States, an issue in which he beat Kamala Harris by 12 points. He is now 64 points underwater. You don’t see changes like this; but the key issue that got him elected, now he’s way down there in the Gulf of Mexico.”
Enten also cited data from Fox News that revealed that Democrats had become the more trusted party on inflation among Independents by 18 points. Four years earlier, the GOP had a commanding 27-point lead on the issue. To put into perspective how significant the issue truly was, Enten referenced another survey revealing 38% of Independents viewed inflation as their top issue at the moment. Another 14% named the economy in general as their chief concern.
“So this is going to be the key issue in the midterm elections for independents,” Enten said, “and they really, really, really hate Republicans and Donald Trump right now, and they really care about it.”
