‘Wasn’t Very Productive’: Markwayne Mullin Dishes on Tense Call With Trump and Mamdani Over ICE Shooting

Homeland Security chief Markwayne Mullin spilled details about his two-hour phone call with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D), Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY), and President Donald Trump Friday in the wake of an ICE shooting in New York City that injured one man.

Mamdani denounced the shooting of Oscar Belgal in the neck while his five-year-old child sat in the back of his vehicle as an “unconscionable and incredibly serious situation.” Mamdani said he called Trump Thursday night to demand ICE leave New York City.

Mullin told Fox News’s Martha MacCallum about the four-way call they had Friday.

“I’ve got to be frank, here, the governor was being somewhat respectful and reasonable. Mamdani was being — the mayor was being cordial but unrealistic. The fact that they wanted to release this individual back on the streets is absurd,” Mullin said.

He continued:

President Trump was very cordial. He was very nice. He said, “Listen, NYPD is — they are the finest. If you guys want to take custody of him, they will be happy to have custody — give you custody of him while the investigation is ongoing. But keep in mind this guy is on probation for —” let me explain what he’s on probation for. Four robbery charges, two charges of felony assault, felony larceny, assault, a weapons assault, weapons possession, a misdemeanor larceny, possession of stolen property, and two felony charges of dangerous drugs, all in three years, and that’s how long he’s been in the country. And the president is like, “He’s got probation violations. New York PD can obviously pick him up and hold him. If you’re willing to do that we’ll release him into your custody,” to which the mayor refused to do that. He wanted him fully released and back on the streets. We can’t do that. President Trump said we’re going to go after the worst of the worst, and install law and order.

Mullin added, “While it was a long conversation it wasn’t very productive, even though President Trump tried his best to make a deal.”

Belgal was treated at a hospital for his injuries before Mullin said ICE moved him out of state to a “highly secured facility because of the threat he has and his history of evading police.”

Mamdani posted a reminded Friday afternoon for New Yorkers to know their rights.
