Two Killed After Pickup Truck Rams Youth Soccer Match
Two people were killed Saturday — one child and one adult — after a pickup truck careened onto a field during a youth soccer match in Wichita, KS.
Wichita’s Police Captain Aaron Moses told reporters that first responders rushed to Stryker Soccer Complex after receiving multiple 911 calls around 3:25 p.m. Central Time.
The incident occurred on a field where teams from the Sporting Wichita Academy soccer club league were playing, The New York Times reported.
Moses said the unidentified victims were declared dead at the scene. Multiple other people were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
“This is a tragedy,” Moses said.
CNN’s Mark Morales reported that authorities are trying to figure out how the vehicle was able to get past barriers and onto the field. The driver has not be identified.
“Now the driver is in custody…also in that car, there were two juveniles,” Morales said, adding that authorities “are asking for anybody that was at the field, any parents, or anybody that was there to send them any video recordings from the soccer field. This is something that law enforcement routinely does in these scenarios, where they just try to collect as much evidence as they possibly can to sort of piece together not only where the truck was going, but where it was coming from.”
“We ask that you keep all individuals and families affected in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the city of Wichita said in a statement.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly (D) said in a statement that she is monitoring the situation and in touch with Wichita’s mayor.
In a statement, the Stryker Soccer Complex said employees were praying for the victims.
“Our hearts are heavy as we process the tragic events at Stryker today,” the statement said. “We are holding everyone impacted, the injured, their families, and all those who witnessed this heartbreaking event close in our thoughts and prayers.”
