President Donald Trump came under fire Monday after he was completely drowned out by Marine Force One while unveiling a new helipad at the White House.
The president boarded the helicopter alongside Natalie Harp, Susie Wiles, Stephen Miller, and Margo Martin. Though he attempted to give a speech, his words were inaudible because the event was not attended by the White House press pool following Trump’s decision to ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the Oval Office.
The networks have filed a federal lawsuit in response to the ban. On Monday CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox News, and CNN released a joint statement noting the TV press pool would no longer attend White House events.
White House rotational TV pool chair and Fox News Washington Bureau Chief Bryan Boughton wrote, “Effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President. This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties. There will be no replacement pool put in place.”
The Marine Force One event prompted plenty of jeering and mocking from members of the media.
“Glorious,” wrote Lauren Rozen on X.
Vanity Fair’s Washington Correspondent (and former Mediaite editor in chief) Aidan McLaughlin predicted, “He’s gonna lift the ban by the end of the week.”
Political commentator Keith Edwards could only laugh.
The New York Times’ Chief White House Correspondent and MS NOW analyst Peter Baker said, “The decision by the television outlets not to participate in the White House pool today in response to Trump’s self-declared “ban on the free press” will leave the most TV-addicted president in our history without major network cameras recording his every utterance and movement.”
He added in a second message, “If a president can throw news organizations out of the White House because he dislikes their coverage, then no news organization is truly free because it means we are all in the building only at his sufferance.”
Journalist Aaron Rupar added on, “LMFAO — Trump is holding an event at the White House right now but there’s no audio because the press pool isn’t there. The Newsmax host notes that this is an example of Trump’s attacks on the press ‘backfiring just a little bit.'”
Meidas Touch’s Scott Robertson wryly noted, “[I] love it when a plan comes together.”
“Oh God this is so good,” the account for The Tennessee Holler wrote on X.
HuffPost’s S.V. Date added, “Having banned the TV pool [with] expensive boom mics, the WH is streaming this ribbon cutting and you can’t hear a single word he is saying.”
Project Liberal co-founder Joshua Reed Eakle observed, “Oh, the networks might’ve found the most effective leverage any human has weaponized against Trump to date.”
