Trump Promises to Pay ‘Reporters’ a Commission For Finding Fraud: ‘Trillions’ Have Been ‘Stolen’
President Donald Trump pledged to pay a “1% commission” Tuesday to anyone who turns in fraudsters — even “reporters.”
Speaking Tuesday during an Oval Office event in which he recognized right-leaning independent journalist Nick Shirley, Trump claimed the new Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program would pay out so well journalists might want to ditch their jobs.
“If you turn somebody in and you let’s say a report and you find a billion dollars, we are giving a commission to that person of 1%. It’s a lot of money. And if it’s 10 billion, 200 billion, 400 billion, we are giving a 1% commission to that person,” he claimed.
There are rules though, the president noted in his remarks:
You have to prove you were the one and prove that it was you. I don’t know if you can do this but subject to the laws of our nation, which I feel very strongly about, if a reporter turns somebody in, you have to get approval perhaps you’ll be a wonderful newspaper.
But if you turn somebody in you get a 1% commission. You may turn it down or you may say I’m not going to be a reporter any longer. This is too easy. So the reporter turns somebody in. We’re going to continue the same 1%.
So if somebody turns somebody in for a million dollars but the million dollars is very small potatoes. You get a 1% commission subject to the rules of the nation, subject to all the things.
We are going to let the reporters for the first time in many cases in your lives you’ve done a good job. Some are very professional journalists.
But it’s just not a very profitable thing to do but if it’s a very important thing to do. A few things are more important than good journalism.
We are going to, if they are allowed to do it, and if you can get approval from your media outlet whoever that may be, we’re going to let the reporters partake because you know a lot of things that are happening.
I’m going to add into that group of people reporters. If anybody turns anybody in, a billion dollars, 5 billion, 100 billion, you get a 1% commission.
“I think that would be amazing,” he added before claiming “trillions” has been stolen by fraudsters and calling out “crooked attorney generals” in New York and Minnesota.
“I can name all of them,” he said. “I can name all of them pretty much.”
The president then praised Vice President JD Vance and his anti-fraud efforts, including work to boot what Vance has said are more than half a million fraudulent accounts from the Obamacare rolls.
“It’s incredible, without any incentive, the kind of money that they’ve already found. Billions and billions of dollars,” Trump said.
