Trump Pitches Changing Name of Lake Ontario in Latest Salvo of Canadian Tariff Tiff

President Donald Trump fired another shot in the ongoing trade war with Canada, proposing Lake Ontario’s name be changed to Lake America.

Posting to his Truth Social account early Tuesday morning, Trump said he was giving the matter “serious consideration.”

“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing [sic] much business with Ontario any longer,” Trump said in the post. “Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

A short time later, Trump followed up with a response to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s assertion that the president was pushing a trade deal that would have “weakened French language protections.”

“I would never interfere with Canadians speaking French! In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing,” Trump posted. “This lie was made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec. I love French Canadians!”

Trump’s post came hours before Canada was to announce retaliatory tariffs against the U.S.

On Monday, Trump was locked in a fierce war of words with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who told CTV that Trump “can kiss my a**,” and threatened to cut power to U.S. manufacturing plants.

In response, Trump posted the following to Truth Social. “Lots of ‘bluster’ from Doug Ford, who is the Premier of the Canadian Province of Ontario, but who is better known as the less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother of the late, great, Rob Ford. America has been carrying Canada for decades, but no longer!”

He added: “The U.S.A. will always be far bigger, richer, and stronger than Canada. Without the United States, Canada couldn’t survive — It’s where they get all of their money and, because of their current bad leadership, primarily Governor Carney, and his Flunky, Ford, they will not be allowed to keep taking advantage of the United States — Their key to survival.”

The dispute hit a fever pitch on Monday after Trump ramped up the trade war with 50 percent tariffs, which Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged to match “dollar-for-dollar.”

After trade talks between the two nations collapsed late Friday, Carney declared the economic impasse an “attack” on his nation.

Carney addressed reporters Saturday hours after telling his negotiators to return to Ottawa in the face of failed negotiations to stave off the threatened hefty tariff.

“You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked,” he said.
