President Donald Trump insisted his job approval is somehow actually 60% as polling has shown he’s one of the least popular presidents going into the midterms.

In an interview with The Washington Examiner’s Byron York, Trump dismissed polls showing him with a cratering approval rating as “fake.”

“It’s fake,” Trump said after York brought up that he was at a 38.8% approval and 60.4% disapproval in an average of polls by RealClearPolitics.

The president called out The New York Times specifically over their use of Wedgewood Polls, a company that recently admitted they were pumping out phony numbers as a social experiment after a report threatened to expose them.

The paper said they did not use those fake polls to help in calculating the president’s job approval.

“The job approval, they said it’s 37, 38?” Trump asked. “I’m not at 38.”

When pressed by York for what he believes his job approval actually is, the president suggested it’s somewhere in the 60s.

“I don’t believe I could be beaten by anybody,” he said. “I think that if I needed it, which I don’t, I think 60.”

Trump then pivoted toward a poll highlighted by CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten that he’s previously pulled out at rallies.

“I think I’d be in the 60s now. Now, in the Republican Party, I’m way up. Show him the 99%. Have you seen it?” Trump said.

In the CNN segment, Enten showed that Trump’s approval with MAGA voters remains near 100%. The full segment, however, includes some less favorable numbers for the president.

Enten noted that Trump has gone from a +8 net approval rating on inflation in the 2024 presidential election to -45 points just ahead of the midterms.

Enten has done plenty of other coverage of Trump’s plummeting approval since then too. This week, the data analyst declared there is “a five alarm Trumpster fire” after Trump received 31% approval in a Reuters/Ipsos poll, the lowest recorded for him in both of his presidential terms.

Still, Trump has continued praising Enten and he even lauded the network this week for the “nice polls,” despite recently trying to boot them from the White House.

“They did do some nice polls on me, I must say. If CNN keeps doing those polls, I’ll like them more and more,” he said.

The New York Times also released a poll, conducted with Siena College, this week showing Trump with a 34% approval rating. The paper noted it’s the worst approval for a president this close to the midterms besides Harry Truman, who had a 33% approval going into the midterms in 1946.
