President Donald Trump may be so desperate to make a red dent in the midterm elections that he’s turning to an old nemesis to encourage Republicans to vote — mail-in balloting.

Trump posted a video to Truth Social Saturday saying, “The 2026 midterm elections are upon us, and I’m asking every patriot to get out and vote. This is one of the most important elections of our lives, so to learn how and where to vote, go online to swampthevoteusa.com. If your state has early voting, do not wait. Go out and vote. Vote early, vote by mail, or vote in person on election day, November 3rd, so we can defeat the radical left Dumocrats in a midterm victory that is too big to rig. We’ve got to beat the Dumocrats. I call them Dumocrats because their policies are so bad.”

It’s a far cry from just a few months ago, when Trump signed an executive order to restrict voting by mail, then railed against the Supreme Court for striking it down. Trump accused the court of giving Democrats a license to cheat.

“Republicans just got another bad decision from the United States Supreme Court, one that the Court System took forever to give, and then blamed it, in part, on no time left to implement a solution to our totally CORRUPT and out of control Mail-In voting ‘disaster,’ which is a laughing stock all over the World, and where we are the only country that has to endure such a Nation Destroying SCAM,” Trump wrote just over two weeks ago.

All the while, Trump continues to cast his own vote by mail in Florida’s elections, and is now encouraging Republicans to do the same, at least for now.

The New York Times reported that Saturday’s post “was the latest contortion from Mr. Trump on mail balloting. He has for years promoted unfounded claims that mail voting is rife with fraud, while working to restrict the practice for Americans, an effort that has been stymied by lawmakers and the courts. As recently as July, he said “mail-in ballots are inherently corrupt.” (There is no evidence of widespread fraud in mail voting.)
