President Donald Trump claimed on social media that Chinese President Xi Jinping liked his idea of renaming Artificial Intelligence as Super Intelligence.
“Very productive meeting with President Xi for both the U.S.A. and China,” Trump posted Friday. “Tremendous things will be happening. Like almost everyone else, he seemed to like calling the poorly and inaccurately named Artificial Intelligence to a far more accurate and important name, SUPER INTELLIGENCE. That would be “SUPER!” Everyone last night agreed, also. President DJT.”
“Last night” was the state dinner for Xi, which included tech executives Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman, Tim Cook, and Mark Zuckerberg.
Earlier this month, Trump posted a Truth Social poll to help him pick a new name for what he called the “very ineloquent” moniker of AI.
The president ran three separate polls laying out his alternative names to replace AI: Super Intelligence, Extreme Intelligence, and Supreme Intelligence.
“Many people think that the words ‘Artificial Intelligence’ are inaccurate, and very ineloquent, relative to AI, or Artificial Intelligence,” Trump wrote at the time. “A far more elegant and accurate description of this new phenomena would be Superior Intelligence (SI) or, Extreme Intelligence (EI) or, Supreme Intelligence (SI). This is a Poll, and I would appreciate everybody voting! Which is the best name for this ever growing ‘Revolution?’” Trump wrote.
Trump is a frequent poster of AI “slop” and repeatedly posts images of himself him dressed as a super hero or doing outlanding things like walking on the moon or riding a lion.
The president has resisted efforts to regulate AI, telling Americans that doing so would hurt U.S. competition with the Chinese.
“President Xi, of China, just announced that China will be doing absolutely nothing to stand in the way of AI, or its future,” Trump wrote on Sept. 14.
Reuters reported that the two leaders discussed AI during the state visit, but that they differed in their views on regulation.
“Trump, who has declared that AI should be called super intelligence, or SI, said in a social media post that he wants ‘to leave it exactly where it is’ and rely on the US Department of Justice rather than impose any new guardrails. He insisted that China
held the same position.”
“But Xi said on Thursday that, as leading nations on AI, China and the US must manage its growth,” the report said, quoting Xi saying, “We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good, and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control and serves the wellbeing of the people.”
